How To Get The Most Money For Those Textbooks

April 29, 2011

Can you believe it? The semester has come to an end! If you’re like me, the end of the semester always feels so surreal; the routines that you have established, the friends in your classes, they will all just be a memory. One thing that I look forward to, however, is ditching that stack of textbooks that are always cluttering up my room. Though you may have forgotten (because it was  so long ago), at one point those textbooks cost hundreds of dollars. While at that time you may have just forked over the money and tried to forget about it, those textbooks are now each like little cashier’s checks just waiting to be cashed. So how can you recoup the most money for those expensive books? Here are a few tips:

Sell Early
Waiting to sell your textbooks is like rolling a dice; you could very well end up with a snake-eyes, and that means that you end up with a lot less money for your books. You want money don’t you? Then sell them right away! The second you are done with your final! This assures that you will get the most money, and that whoever you are selling them to is still looking to buy.

Shop Around
Every textbook buyer is not equal; some will pay much more money for your books, some will pay a lot less. If you are just settling with whatever is the most convenient, you are likely missing out on $20, $30, $50 per book. Using a comparison tool like BigWords.com can take a lot of the hassle out of the process; BigWords and sites like it present the buyback prices offered by most of the largest textbook buyback websites, meaning that you don’t have to spend your entire summer vacation surfing textbook websites.

Coupons!
Coupons are not just for moms; they are becoming more and more popular for all online transactions. Many websites offer coupons that result in you getting paid more money for your books. For example, TextbookStop.com is offering 10% more when you sell them your books if you simply ‘like’ their Facebook page. Do the math; if you sell $150 worth of textbooks, that means you will get $165 instead; that’s a couple extra pizzas! There are also many other deals available for those looking to sell textbooks online.

Do you have any tips that have helped you get more bang for your books? Leave them in the comments and help your fellow students.
